Happy Love Day

When I was driving around Calgary the radio station I was listening to, Jack FM I believe, was planning a St. Valentines Day Massacre for today - no love songs, all day long. Nothing but "Love Stinks" and "You Jerk" songs to help pass the day. The Fan Sports Radio was warning the male listeners that the weekend would be followed by Valentines Day, "Otherwise known to us as, Monday."

So today was the day of love.

The kids got into it. Micah had made cards for everyone and blew up a balloon for Lauralea and I, drawing our faces on them and putting them on our dinner plates. Hillary had gone to some considerable effort to make some cool cards, of which mine was the coolest. Lauralea, who knows me best, got me some pink Candy Corns and some Rolaids.

And I? I took a long nap, simply because I was exhausted.

I dunno, it really didn't trigger in my brain the size of a day some of these people around here were creating it to be, so I kinda missed it.

And now, well maybe we'll just call er a day and start again tomorrow.

    I just LOVE that line.

I DO NOT DO valentines day. Chris knows it, and is quite happy, secure in the knowledge that I actually DO love her. I may also bring home flowers and stuff for her for no other reason from time to time too. And she likes to make me valentines stuff, and I've stopped making comments about it, so that's OK too.

So last night, completely out of the blue, I took her out to dinner. Nice to see the look of surprise on her face.

  2. Its kind of good to have the kind of love that is secure enough not to have to make a big show of it. On the other hnad the kind of surprises Toni talks about are so cool.

Leo and I talked by phone. I guess the missing him is love too. And I got flowers from one daughter and hugs and kisses from another and phone calls and made a visit to deliver a card to a cranky grandson. So, all in all, I don't think having a day specified for remembering love is too bad an idea - it is a reminder at least.

  3. At work we called it Black Monday. I worked last nite, so we all just ate cinnimon hearts til our tongues were raw, and made fun of all the single people that came in last nite,...or all the couples that thought coming to our store was considered a "date"

  5. That's nice Micah, but isn't it supposed to be toward someone you're having romantic feeling for?

Maybe diffeent coutries have different takes on it.

  6. I'd say it's not necessarily for people you have feelings for--at least not within a certain age group. I remember in elementary school we'd give all the kids in our class valentines.

  7. we only gave everyone valentines because we had to. We weren't allowed to hand out any unless we had some for everyone.

  8. ok I know this is a bit 'after the fact' but I have always been at odds with the way the North American peoples have taken this--and most other innocent events for that matter. Now before you go calling me a scrooge or a carmudgen (sp?) I DO love celebrations and parties and having fun.. but I'm with Toni on this one. Being from the UK (where they obviously know how to do Valentines:)) Valentines Day was a day for surprises, where girls received cards from boys ANONOMOUSLY, where romantic feelings WERE held very high and the males in the group went to great lengths to woo the females. And that's how I think it should continue to be. Johanna, when my kids were younger in school and the notes came home from their teachers (accompanied with the entire class list) saying that if one was getting a card, then everyone was getting a card....I was a bit crazy! Can you say "Communism"?

What happened to romance? Why do we have to learn it in pre-marriage counselling? Of all times and places. No wonder we got problems.

    OK enough.

    Sorry folks!

P.S. I got a card from someone way back when I was in school and I STILL don't know who it was from;)

  9. Hey Micah - even small kids need love ;)

Janet, nice one - the word you wanted was Curmudgeon

    :)

But yes, it would be nice if the original thing of romance had been preserved. Over here now it's all SEX SEX SEX. Very hard to find a card that isn't full of it.
