Best book I've found on Tolkien's theology and how it watermarks itself through the trilogy is: *J.R.R. Tolkien's Sanctifying Myth: Understanding Middle-earth,* by Bradley J. Birzer (ISI Books, ISBN 1-882926-84-6). Amazing how much Christian imagery and theology remains in the film production, because the screenwriters sought to stay true as possible to Tolkien's vision - - even though none of them apparently holds to that vision for themselves.
