C:\

Well, six hours later. Windows has been reinstalled but I'm having trouble with some Drivers. The Modem comes and goes, so I'm not too sure it isn't doing the same things.

The monitor drivers finally took hold. And that's as far as I got.

I was getting pretty discouraged, so Thomas and I went to the Future Shop a bit. Nothing affordable there.

But, tonight Laura and I are off on a date.

One bright spot on a technologically dreary day.

  1. Call these guys

    SecondarySource.com

    They specialize in used computers.

Don't let the prices on the website fool you. Call them and ask them for $100 Desktop PC. You will probably get PII 350 or 400 with enough ram and decent sized hard drive.

We have bought a number of these machines for Bethany. We've had some problems with some of them, but they do honor their warranty.

  2. That's exactly the right thing to do. A PII 350 running Win 98 (or even 95 version 2, if you don't use USB stuff) and office 97 is actually a decent bit of kit. Unless you haven't got a choice, avoid Orifice 2000 and later like the bug ridden plague.

On the other hand, don't you have discount component suppliers there? I use www.ebuyer.com for all my builds, and they have an outlet in the US (ship to you?). Just before Christmas I bought a sytax MOBO for ?25 and 256Mb DDR400 memeory for about ?30. All you'd need would be a Duron processor for about ?20 and you'll have a system that has 10 times the performance for about $150. I can't actually access their US site to give you prices, because they've set the site to detect country of origin, and I can't remember how to mask that.

Worth thinking about if you don't want used.

  4. Interesting use of language there, Randall. If blogspeak doesn't get fixed then I'll probably join Halospam. I just can't be doing with faffing around with the code for the page these days.

    Will fix soon, promise.
