Insight #1

I just got done watching a British program called Heartbeat. Here's a deep insight.

On British Television you can be dumpy or have pimples or look goofy, and still be on Television.

I just like that.

  1. They've twigged that in the UK people like 'reality' TV, although they've always used 'real' people on TV. Compare British soaps with US ones - Crossroads vs Dallas, Coronation street with ? - I don't know any more soaps, 'coz we don't have a TV. Peoplehave always been a bit fat, spotty, balding etc. Just like people on the street. There's little mileage in making people from the UK look tall, blond and heroic because no-one would recognise them ;-)

A little insight into the British character can be had from other programs, where 'ordinary' people win things based on a mix of talent and luck. Like the programs to select the next set of pop-stars (these gave us people like Girls aloud, Marlowe and some pretty boys whose names I forget). At the root of the UK psyche is a desire to root for the underdog, and although deeply buried these days, it's still there.
